ICSHP and INEEL’s joint Research Center project is formally presented at the CEM 8 Summit

BEIJING– June 8, 2017– The Mexican National Institute of Electricity and Clean Energies (INEEL), in coordination with the International Center on Small Hydro Power (ICSHP), took the stage today during the 8thClean Energy Ministerial Summit (8 CEM) to formally submit a joint project to establish the China-Mexico Research and Development Center on Small Hydropower.

This joint project has been under development by INEEL and ICSHP since 2016, and was formally presented by the Minister of Energy Leonardo Beltrán at a high-level bilateral meeting held between the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) and the Mexican Ministry of Energy (SENER) during the 8 CEM.

Pursuant to the joint vision of ICSHP and INEEL, the China- Mexico Research and Development Center on Small Hydro Power outlines the tasks of research and promotion of technology exchange to support the rapid development of small hydro as a clean, sustainable and efficient source of energy. This joint project aims to raise national awareness on the increasing relevance of renewable energy sources. Likewise, it will develop capacity building and exchange opportunities between the two countries, and jointly enable communication channels and financing mechanismsto insure the sustainability of projects.

ICSHP met  the Mexican delegation at the CEM Summit, where the purpose of the Research Center project between INEEL and ICHSP was discussed with members of SENER. Highlighting Mexico’s intention to explore its vast potential in small hydro, and its interest in joining efforts with China to increase the use of renewables in its energy mix, SENER included the joint Research Center project in the intra-ministerial agenda, which was welcomed and encouraged by the Chinese side.

It is expected that this joint cooperation effort between INEEL and ICSHP will allow both parties to support a greater understanding and potential development of Mexico’s small hydro resources, and ultimately enable both parties to contribute to the expansion of knowledge and cooperation opportunities in the field of clean renewable energy.
