20-24 June, 2016 - The small hydropower training course was successfully held by the International Center on Small Hydro Power (ICSHP) and Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) in Nairobi, Kenya. The training course aims to promote capacity building for development of small hydropower in COMESA countries. Furthermore, the goal is to help Chinese medium and small hydropower equipment manufacturers and enterprises further participate in worldwide small hydropower development by widespreading and sharing advanced Chinese technology and experience.
Approximately 20 representatives from 7 COMESA member countries including Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Madagascar, Malawi, Seychelles and Zimbabwe as well as COMESA secretaries attended the event. In the opening ceremony, Dr. Joseph Njoroge, Principal Secretary of the Kenya State Department of Energy, Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, as well as Dr. Kipyego Cheluget, the Assistant Secretary General of COMESA made a speech. Mr. Dong Guofeng, the Deputy Division Chief of ICSHP, made a speech on behalf of Ms. Cheng Xialei, the Director General of ICSHP. In addition, Dr. Frederick Nyang, Director of Economic Regulation, Energy Regulatory Commission, made a speech on behalf of Dr. Joseph Ng’ang’a, the Director of Energy Regulatory Commission. Prof. Tan Xiangqing, the ICSHP Deputy Chief Engineer attended the opening ceremony as well.
During the 5-day event, participants were given a series of professional lectures on topics including: the Experiences and Remarks of Rural Electrification on Small Hydro Power in China, the Development Plan of Water Energy Resources, SHP Site Selection, Calculation of Installed Capacity for SHP, Electromechanical Equipment Selection for Hydropower Stations, Integrated Automatic Technology and Solutions for Hydropower Projects, Automatic Controlling Systems, Small Hydropower Station Key Technology, and a Case Study of Typical Development of Small Hydro Power.
In addition, visited the Wanjii Hydropower Station of the KEN-GEN. On 24 June an introduction of ICSHP activities was provided, Chinese enterprise representatives introduced their main products and services, participants presented country reports, carried out technology exchange as well as consultation on small hydropower with Chinese representatives. Furthermore, the Chinese delegation was invited by the Kenya Branch of Jiangxi Water and Hydropower Construction Co. Ltd to visit its North Mathioya Small Hydropower Project under construction.
The Chinese delegation met with representatives of the Eastern Africa Global Water Partnership and the Ethiopia Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy, and visited the Chinese Mission to United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
On 24 June, Dr. Chris Kiptoo, the Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Cooperation attended the closing ceremony and gave a speech. He congratulated the successful organization of the training course and highly praised the achievements of Chinese small hydropower development. He expressed desire to strengthen cooperation on small hydropower development with China. In addition, Dr. Chris Kiptoo awarded the training certificates signed jointly by COMESA and ICSHP.
Nari Water Resources and Hydropower Company, a core member of the International Network on Small Hydro Power (INSHP), attended this event and took part in lectures. Other core members including Hunan Vanguard Group Co. Ltd, and Wuhan Wushui Electric Technology Co. Ltd., as well as regulary members Fuzhou Fang Yuan Electric Co. Ltd, Fujian Zhenghe Yaolong Hydraulic Turbine Co. Ltd and Sunshine Law Firm also attended the event. The Kenya Branch of Jiangxi Water and Hydropower Construction Co. Ltd. was invited to participate in some activities.
