Sub-center in Asia

The UNIDO Regional Center for Small Hydro Power in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India was set up to exploit local renewable energy resources. It serves as a transfer point for China’s small hydropower practice to India and the West Asia region.

The Government of India has recognized the vast potential of micro, mini, and small hydropower resources to provide a renewable, economic, inflation free and environmentally benign source of energy with short gestation period. Furthermore, small and mini hydropower provides a solution for the energy shortages in remote and hilly areas where extension of the grid system is comparatively uneconomical.

The regional center actively promotes mini/micro/small hydropower development through various local bodies. It provided technical consultancy for the Meenvallom SHP (3 MW) detailed project report set up in Palghat District Panchayath. It also acted as the technical secretariat in getting clearance for the 50 kW Kallar micro hydro scheme in Idukki District Panchayath. Together with ICSHP, the Kerala Regional Center has implemented 18 SHP projects with 107 MW total capacity. The Center is in the process of establishing MoUs with various global agencies including Water Pumps Oy in Finland and IT Power in the UK.
