On the morning of July 9th, UN Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki-Moon visited the International Center on Small Hydro Power and delivered an important speech at the Session on South-South Cooperation for Climate Change jointly organized by UNDP, UNIDO and ICSHP. The Secretary General’s visit was accompanied by Mr. Wu Hongbo, UN Under-Secretary-General, as well as Ambassador LIU Jieyi, Permanent Mission of the People's Republic of China to the United Nations.
Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki-Moon said in his speech that Energy is central to social and economic well-being. All the countries in the world and the United Nations must make an effort to work together so as to realize the great promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the world’s new framework for advancing peace and prosperity for all on a healthy planet.
He commended the work of the International Center on Small Hydro power in carrying out innovative trilateral cooperation projects, such as its Renewable Energy Technology Transfer Project. He highlighted that China has gained much experience in climate change solutions and environmental impacts mitigation that can be spread to other developing countries. He recommended that China share its technological capacity, knowhow and policy experience with other developing countries through platforms such as the ICSHP to promote South-South Cooperation for climate change solutions that benefit everyone.
Since its establishment ICSHP has worked over 20 years through trilateral cooperation between developed countries, developing countries and international organizations in technical and economic development. It promotes global small hydropower development to provide clean, affordable and sufficient energy, create employment opportunities, improve the ecological environment, and mitigate poverty for the rural areas in developing countries.
Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki-Moon pointed out ICSHP is a good example of South-South Cooperation between China and the UN. It is in line with what President Xi Jinping has declared as South-South Cooperation. He wrote in his inscription “Small hydropower is an important renewable energy. I hope the International Center on Small Hydro Power (ICSHP) continues to make great contributions to the development of small hydropower worldwide”.
Ms. CHENG Xialei, ICSHP Director General introduced South-South Cooperation activities carried out by Dr. LIU Heng, ICSHP Senior Advisor, presented case studies of South-South Cooperation in Africa. Mr. Philippe Scholtes, Managing Director for Technical Cooperation UNIDO gave a brief of cooperation work between UNIDO and China in promoting global energy development.
Over 100 participants from UN Headquarters, UN agencies in China, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, Ministry of Water Resources of China, the local Zhejiang government, related governmental institutions, enterprises, scientific institutions and ICSHP staff attended the event.
