World Hydropower Congress: Hydropower to generate 2.05 billion kilowatts by 2050

The 2015 World Hydropower Congress convened in Beijing 19-21 May.

In light of an expected 2.05 billion kW hydropower generation by 2050, the meeting focused on the development direction and goals of the hydropower sector.

Organized by the International Hydropower Association (IHA), the congress brought together more than 700 delegates from nearly 60 countries. More than 100 news media reporters and over 100 staff members were present. Delegates engaged in discussions of hydropower technology and management experience, hydropower industry developments, and established cooperation bridges.

In closing ceremony remarks China Hydropower Engineering Society Executive Vice President Li Ju noted China’s plans to increase total installed hydropower capacity (including conventional and pumped storage) by 600 million kilowatts, accounting for 30% of total global hydropower installed capacity by 2050.

During the ceremony IHA issued its 'IHA Hydropower Beijing Declaration'. The declaration states commitments to use water to provide society with advanced energy, and to better able provide fresh water for human services. Based on current growth trend, the world’s hydropower installed capacity expected to double in the next 35 years.

Themed panel topics focused on international cooperation and risks management and assessment. An established consensus centered on efforts to promote sustainable hydropower development and win-win situations to jointly shape the future of hydropower.
