16-18 July the 55th World Water Council board of governors meeting convened in Hangzhou. Minister of Water Resources Chen Lei, Honorary President of the World Water Council (WWC) Locke Fu Xun, President of the WWC Benedito  Braga and vice governor of Zhejiang province Xu Ming Huang delivered speeches at the opening ceremony.

In his opening comments Mr. Chen Lei pointed to the important role of the World Water Council as the world’s largest and most influential water-related organization. He noted the council’s long-term commitment to promoting the sustainable use and conservation of water resources to improve human well-being.

Chen Lei shared with the assembly Chinese government initiatives to promote water security and accelerate the development of water reform. A series of major strategic plans include: an advanced flood control and drought relief system; accelerated construction of rural drinking water safety systems to achieve UN Millennium Development Goal six years ahead of schedule; increased access to effective irrigation systems to help safeguard world food security through improved food production; stringent system for water use efficiency; and a water pollution prevention plan of action.

Chen Lei proposed four points for cooperation between the Chinese Ministry of Water Resources and the World Water Council. First, to strengthen exchanges so as to actively carry out policy and strategic dialogue, strengthen exchange of relevant information and mutual support. Second, expand areas of pragmatic cooperation to engage government departments, research institutes, water companies, international organizations and other relevant stakeholders. Third, to implement innovative water management concepts derived from the council’s research. Lastly, jointly cooperate to set up a monitoring system for implementation of post-2015 water development goals.

A total of more than 70 representatives from national water management sectors, international organizations, academic institutions and related business representatives attended the meeting.
