Shiwang’andu Small Hydropower Project in Zambia
2012-4-26 15:49:55

UNIDO is implementing a GEF funded project to promote renewable energy based electricity generation for isolated mini-grids in Zambia. The complete project has a total budget of US$ 7.506 million with the GEF grant amounting to US$ 2.950 million and co-financing to the tune of US$ 4.556 million.

The project aims at establishing three mini-grids powered by renewable energy sources (solar, biomass and small hydro) in rural communities that cannot be reached in the immediate term by the national grid. The electricity generated will be used for income generating activities in the targeted communities as well as for other energy services needed by the local population. To ensure local ownership, the communities, individual consumers, the public utility, and investors will actively contribute to the programme.

The project aims at installing:

a) a small hydropower powered mini-grid (1 MW);
b) a biomass-gasifier powered mini-grid (1 MW); and
c) a solar powered energy mini-grid (36 kW).

The project will also contribute to a legal, institutional, and policy framework that provides a favorable environment for commercial deployment of renewable energy powered mini-grids in rural areas of Zambia. National and local capacity for deployment of renewable energy technologies for power generation in rural areas of Zambia will be enhanced to sustain further expansion of the market for renewable energy. The project will introduce new and innovative financial and institutional structures to encourage private investments.

The construction and commissioning of Shiwang’andu Mini Hydro Project will be completed by ICSHP in May 2012.
